US superstar Anastacia admits she’s chosen not to have kids after breast cancer battle
ANASTACIA has conquered the charts as well as cancer – twice – during her career.
But the singer’s incredible achievements will never include motherhood, as she has bravely admitted she has chosen not to have children.
In the latest edition of my Bizarre Life podcast, the American reveals that after having a double mastectomy in 2013 she has decided to put her career first.
She said: “I’m conscious of not having a child at this point in my life. When I was younger I wanted, so the word wanted, wanted, wanted, was there until a certain period when I was like, ‘This is not going to happen’. Like, ‘Imagine having a kid right now?’
“I don’t feel less of a woman by not having a child, I feel more of a woman by empowering myself to do what is right for me and not feel like I want to see me in a baby face.”
Ahead of her 50th birthday next year, Anastacia, who has previously said she would consider adopting if she was unable to conceive, is also quick to make another thing clear — her body clock has played no part in her bold decision.
Reflecting on fellow pop legend JANET JACKSON having twins in her fifties, she told me in Bizarre Life, which you can subscribe to now on iTunes, Apple Podcasts or your favourite podcast provider: “Honey, all this works, don’t get it twisted. My parts are working.
“I choose not, that’s what I mean. It’s an actual choice. I have to continually make that choice or it could happen.”
Anastacia was married for three years to her former bodyguard, Wayne Newton, before they divorced in 2010.
But walking down the aisle for a second time isn’t a trip she intends on making again.
She said: “I know what it’s like to call the man husband and I really loved all of it.
“But I’m older and I don’t need to have that piece of paper as much as I needed to as a little girl.
“I’d like a partner forever type of thing . . . but it’s a choice. I would be OK to be living in sin.
“I haven’t found that one person in the love situation, but I’ve found my career and some people never find that, so I can’t be greedy.
“I’m not the one with two kids and a dog and a picket fence.”
And Anastacia, back with her brilliant seventh album Evolution, is making the most of being “happily single” — even confessing to previously having dabbled with other women.
She told Bizarre Life: “I kissed a girl and I liked it.
“Yet I felt like I was kissing myself so I felt like that was a little narcissistic and I didn’t know what to do with all of that down there. She was full-on lesbo gorgeous, and I was like, ‘I don’t know’. I was about 22, eyes closed, tongue all over the place.”
Having beaten breast cancer twice, as well as further scares along the way and undergoing the double mastectomy, the superstar is an ambassador for Cancer Research UK.
And along with Hollywood’s ANGELINA JOLIE, who also had a double mastectomy, Anastacia is the pin-up girl for survival.
She said: “Mastectomy is a dramatic choice. However, I think her choice, Angelina, and my choice was life first instead of vanity, instead of a sensation that you may miss. It was, ‘We want to live and we don’t want to cower to a word called cancer — we’d rather live with a world called can’.
“So that’s what I call cancer. I forget the three letters at the end let’s just keep it can, let’s focus on can and let’s make it happen.”
With that spirit, no wonder she doesn’t need a man.
Still cool on Cole
TENSIONS still haven’t eased between Anastacia and BRENDAN COLE a year after they were partners on Strictly.
She accused him of pushing her so hard in training that she tore open her mastectomy wound.
Anastacia said: “I’d try to say when I couldn’t do something, but he’s such a doer he’d be, ‘Try it! Do it!’
“So I got injured the second time because he kept making me try to do something I couldn’t do.
“My entire pec muscle was ripped to shreds.”
There was controversy when she stayed in the show despite refusing to do a dance-off due to her injury.
They were the sixth pair booted off.
Lifting the lid on life backstage, she added: “Every time I say I’m partnered with Brendan Cole I don’t get a good response.
"They get really excited and I go, ‘Brendan Cole’, and they go ‘Oh’.”
