TypesLectotype: Iconotype, drawn specimen by Le SUEUR
Diagnosis
CommentDiet: omnivore; members of the genus Graptemys are highly adapted to molluscs (Ernst & Barbour 1989)

Type species: Testudo geographica LE SUEUR 1817: 86 is the type species of the genus Graptemys AGASSIZ 1857: 436.

Phylogeny: for a phylogeny of the genus see Thomson et al. 2018.

Habitat: freshwater (lakes, rivers)

Karyotype (Graptemys): Killebrew (1977a) reported the karyotype is 2n = 50: 26 macrochromosomes (16 metacentric, 6 submetacentric, and 4 telocentric or acrocentric), and 24 microchromosomes. McKown (1972), however, found several species to be 2n = 52.

McDowell (1964) revived Boulenger's inclusion (1889) of Graptemys in the genus Malaclemys. Graptemys was not recognized even as a subgenus, because the differences between M. terrapin and G. kohnii are no greater than those between G. kohnii and G. geographica. This arrangement was not widely accepted (see, for example, Ernst and Barbour, 1972, and Dobie and Jackson, 1979). Wood (1977) felt that McDowell had not made a convincing case for the all-inclusive Malaclemys and presented other evidence suggesting the origin of many, if not all, Graptemys from Malaclemys. However, Dobie (1981) showed Malaclemys to differ substantially from Graptemys in osteology,
which raises serious questions about Malaclemys as the immediate ancestor of Graptemys (Ernst & Barbour 1989).

Key to the species of Graptemys: Ernst & Barbour 1989: 217.
EtymologyNamed after the carapacial pattern resembling contour lines on a map.

The genus name means “inscribed turtle”; probably referring to the carapacial pattern.
