Tiger Salamander
(Ambystoma tigrinum)

Tiger salamanders are the only species of salamander found in Utah, and they are widespread in the state. They may be found in a variety of habitat types, as long as there is water nearby. Since the larval stage of the tiger salamander is aquatic and the terrestrial adults must return to water to reproduce, water is a critical component to the life of this amphibian.

Some people may confuse tiger salamanders with lizards. However, they are more closely related to frogs. It is difficult to reliably find these elusive salamanders in Southern Utah and they are often concealed underground. However, they may be seen out in the open after a warm summer rain.
