The story behind the image

In 2004 we traveled Switzerland for a week. We started in Zurich, made a stop in Berne to visit some friends, and concluded the trip in Luzern.

Luzern is a very old town located at the Vierwaldstätter See. With roughly 60,000 inhabitants it is one of the larger cities in Switzerland. The river Reuss flows gently through the city passing two wooden bridges on its way to the lake.

My image shows the historic Lion Memorial (or Löwendenkmal in German) – a dying lion that has been carved into the rock, honoring the war heroes who fell in the Tuileries in 1792. The artwork is quite large which you realize when looking at the tiny blob on the Lion’s paw next to the nose. That’s a dove!

The City of Luzern has put up an excellent page covering all the details of the memorial.
