Young twigs and leaf stalks are reddish. A dense shrub native to S.W. France, Spain and Portugal.

Tolerant to calcareous soil, sun or partial shade. Rocky habitat.

Flowers

A slender spike of small, fragrant 5-petalled flowers. The spike, almost erect, is longer than the leaves.

Leaves

Elliptic oval leaf. Oval to oblong, pointed, serrated and shiny, dark green above.

Fruits Seeds

Drupe: egg-shaped to round, deep purple, 8-13 cm long. Outer fleshy part surrounds a pit.
