Description

A sturdy plant with thick hairy stems, 5 cm thick. The vertical root reaches a length of 1 m.

Grows in wooded areas, waste ground.

Flowers

The flowerhead is two-thirds covered in hooked spines, leaving just a small opening for the red to purple tubular disk florets.

Leaves

Elliptic oval leaf, Cordate heart-shaped. Oval to heart-shaped, undulating margins, 50 cm long. The large leaves, stalked, look similar to dock leaves.

Fruits Seeds

Bur: spherical, 3.5-4.2 cm.

Edible

Stalks (raw or cooked), eaten before flowering.
Roots.

Medical

Roots, of one year’s maturity: to treat skin disorders like boils, eczema and abscesses, also to stimulate the liver and kidneys.
