What You Should Know About Baguio Emergency Precautions

Jul 24, 2023

We all know Baguio as the summer capital of the Philippines, especially with its many amazing tourist spots and the unusually cold weather compared to other parts of the country. Seeing as Baguio City is located in the northern part of the Philippines, it's inevitable that the city will experience disasters such as typhoons, landslides, and floods. Not only that, there's still the ongoing pandemic. Thus, let us discuss safety rules when visiting Baguio City, starting with Baguio Visita.

What is Baguio Visita?

Baguio V.I.S.I.T.A. or Baguio Visitor Information and Travel Assistant, is basically an online registration system for Baguio tourists and visitors, be they from another country or fellow countrymen. It's one of the city's tools to ensure safety as tourism activities continue during the pandemic. How this is done is by using QTP applications (QR-coded tourist passes), a ticketing pass used to monitor the entry and mobility of tourists.

How does Baguio Visita work?

Getting a Baguio Visita Account

Your Baguio Visita account will be the one you can utilize as a personal guide and assistant through its travel tab when traveling to the city. You can create this account through the web portal, visita.baguio.gov.ph, which is the Baguio Visita Website. Travels can be scheduled and historically logged through this. The requirements to complete this account creation are: 1) a government-issued valid ID, 2) a current photo; and 3) a validated email, usually done through a verification link. If any errors concerning this occur, be sure to contact Baguio Visita.

Scheduling a travel

To schedule a travel, you simply need to answer a questionnaire concerning the details of the travel. Once done, simply click submit or confirm. It's recommended you schedule a visit a day before traveling instead of on the day of the travel, this is due to how it will take awhile for your travel request and for the issuance of your QTP to be approved.

Medical Safety Assessment

Once you have a confirmed schedule, your own QTP will have you set. Just be sure to bring your vaccination card indicating your vaccination status or a medical certificate stating your current health or data, like if you're experiencing symptoms or your exposure history. You can easily go to your local health officer in order to grab a health declaration form.

Fully vaccinated travelers or fully vaccinated tourists will have no problems and can travel easily. As for unvaccinated or partially vaccinated travelers (adults), they aren't actually allowed into the city. As for those that are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated and are minors aged 12–17, a negative test result for Antigen or an RT-PCR test that was conducted within 72 hours before or during arrival at the City Triage.

The procedures to all of this can be quite vexing; however, these health and safety rules are all in place in order to protect those of us in the city. These Baguio travel requirements are all worth it and can save lives.

Baguio City and Disasters

Our country is no beginner when it comes to dealing with natural disasters. It's almost a yearly thing at this point, and this can all be accounted for by how the country is home to fault lines: the Marikina Valley Fault, the Western Philippine Fault, the Eastern Philippine Fault, the Southern of Mindanao Fault, and the Central Philippine Fault. We're also at risk of hazards like flooding and landslides due to our properties, like being in low-lying areas, multiple pine trees at risk of falling over from strong winds during a typhoon, and so on.

One such example is the most recent super typhoon, Egay, wherein strong rain and winds heavily affected Baguio City to the point that multiple areas experienced power disruptions and electrical posts falling over. Other cities, such as Manila City, Bulacan, and whatnot, experienced flooding. The entirety of upper Luzon experienced significantly high alert levels and was affected by this.

Who knows? You could be on your trip to Baguio or enjoying the city when these natural disasters happen. What can we then do to at least lower the risk of losing our lives to such hazards?
