New film about Loch Ness Monster was filmed 50 miles away from Loch Ness

A NEW movie about the Loch Ness Monster was shot more than 50 miles away, we can reveal.

Production problems meant that Nessie was filmed at the similar-sized Loch Awe in Argyll rather than its famous home in Inverness-shire.

The flick — following an obsessed billionaire’s search for the mythical beast — co-stars Dynasty legend Stephanie Beacham, 76, and former Taggart actor John Michie, 66.

Director Robbie Moffat told The Scottish Sun on Sunday: “Filming at Loch Ness was difficult when and where we wanted to do it because of getting suitable access to the loch.

“Logistically it was not easy to get in and out of Loch Ness, especially where we wanted to film and on the necessary scale.

“There were no such problems with Loch Awe and Portsonachan proved the ideal location.”

He added: “While some avid viewers who know both lochs well may spot differences the average cinema goer will not.

“Both lochs are a similar length and now Loch Awe has its own monster too.”

Nessie was made by the same team behind 2021 movies Dracula on Holiday and The Right Bus, which both showcased Scotland.

Mr Moffatt added: “It is an endearing and feelgood film that will appeal to all ages.

“The fascination of Nessie is enduring.”

The story weaves together plotlines from Scots classics Local Hero and Whisky Galore.

It sees a US billionaire bequeath £20million to a village in the Highlands connected to the legendary creature.

He is convinced he saw the monster as a boy and becomes obsessed with proving her real.

On his death he leaves a legacy to continue the search.

The tycoon’s son Brad, played by Minority Report actor Patrick Kilpatrick, 73, is determined to contest his father’s will and debunk the monster as a myth.

He calls in his lawyer — played by Beacham — who sends her junior to the village to discredit their Nessie claim.

Michie stars as Jimmy, who helps mastermind a way to stop the village from losing its fortune.

The £500,000 movie also features British Dr Who actress Tanya Fear, 33, below.

The Loch Ness Monster is said to be worth £41million a year in tourism revenue to the region.

There are 200,000 Google searches each month for the creature, the internet giant said.

Irish missionary St Columba is first said to have encountered a beast in the River Ness in 565AD.

The official register has now logged 1,156 sightings from records and other evidence — the latest from a French pharmacist Etienne Camel last Wednesday.

Nessie is due to premiere at the Grosvenor Picture House in Glasgow’s west end on August 5.
