Reaching the FA Cup final with Portsmouth my best achievement, says Avram Grant

Portsmouth's FA Cup showing is indelible in Avram Grant's mind

Avram Grant regards taking Portsmouth to the FA Cup Final in 2010 as his greatest achievement in football - not being the only Chelsea manager to reach a European Cup Final.

The Blues would have won the Champions League for the first time in their history under Grant four years ago had John Terry not slipped as he took a penalty against Manchester United in the shoot-out and his effort struck the woodwork.

But Grant has greater regard for Portsmouth's efforts in reaching Wembley in 2010, where they lost to Chelsea 1-0.

He explained: "My best achievement was at Portsmouth. In Chelsea I was just dealing with football problems, but in Portsmouth it was much much more than just football.

"When I was there, the club went into administration and every day I feared it may be the last day of Portsmouth.

"We didn't even dream about being at Wembley, but from the moment we had the nine point deduction in the League, we put the Cup as a target because we wanted the players to believe in something and also it was the only thing left for us.

"To get there we won against a Sunderland side who were doing well, Birmingham was having their best season, then we beat the club's fierce rivals Southampton and in the semi-final we faced Tottenham, who had beaten Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United in the same month.

"I still remember we had a penalty in the final which if we'd scored, we could have taken the Cup, but Kevin-Prince Boateng, who is now a star at AC Milan missed it and Chelsea scored soon after.

"We lost only 1-0 when everyone thought we'd lose by seven or eight. It was a very touching day for me and one of the moments I will always remember."

Grant has revealed he has had several offers to return to management from abroad but is still hoping to get another job in English football.

The 56-year-old has been out of work since he was sacked by West Ham at the end of last season, following their relegation to the Championship.

But Grant is looking to get back to work as soon as possible and said: "I still have a desire to get back into management, especially after what happened last season with West Ham.

"Things didn't go the way I wanted. I believed in the project at West Ham and I thought we could do things, but it didn't go well.

"I have had many offers from Europe, many good clubs, but my first priority is a job in England. I love this country, I have been here for five and a half years so it is my first option."
