(SPOT.ph) While there is a certain kind of thrill to be found in capping off a tiring and hard-fought week of work or school with a night out on the town with a few friends, those nights could get expensive real fast. Like, have you seen gas and public transport prices recently? As such, we think we're better off staying in on weeknights and playing video games with friends over Discord, instead. Hey, if the games are free, then there would in fact be truth to the saying, "money can't buy you happiness."

Here are 10 online video games multiplayer you can play for free with your friends:

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout

Coming in first place is... what you want to accomplish in this odd game about jelly bean-like characters competing in races and obstacle courses. Fall Guys recently became free-to-play on the Epic Games Store and, as a result, has become one of the fastest games to rise in popularity in 2022. A double feat for Fall Guys, as it already had gained a huge following over the quarantine in 2020. Combining a quirky and colorful game design with truly challenging competitive arenas and mini-games, it's no surprise why Fall Guys was an instant hit with casual and hardcore gamers alike.

Rocket League

Another game that was acquired by Epic Games and put out for free, Rocket League combines the seemingly incompatible worlds of high-octane cars and football. That's right, there's a football and two end goals, but instead of a human person, you're a car running on jet fuel. As a beginner, you'll probably start out just focused on getting the ball into the goal while ramming into other cars to protect the ball. However, once you and your friends start to master aerials and trick shots, you bet you'll be in for an adrenaline-fueled game night—and maybe lots of yelling at your teammates. Apologies in advance.

VRChat

Let's shift gears from the world of competitive gaming for a bit and head into the strange, uncharted territory of virtual reality socializing. VRChat is the perfect "metaverse," as Mark Zuckerburg would call it. You can download the game and hop onto a range of servers that include settings like comedy clubs, art museums, the street nightlife of Japan, haunted mansions, or even the gym. You can gather your friends and create virtual avatars together (users typically select premade characters based off popular animes, childhood cartoons, and other video games), then just hang out with other players around the globe at any of these socializing spots. Some of the deepest conversations we've ever experienced have happened in VRChat with some guy in Nebraska whose character avatar was Mike Wazowski.

You can download VRChat on Steam.

Bloons TD Battles 2

Tower defense games have never been as addicting as it is with Bloons. Perhaps it's all in the game's design of making you a monkey tower fending off against an onslaught of... balloons, for some reason. Its childishness lulls your brain into playing it for hours without realizing it. With the free-to-play Bloons TD Battles 2, you get to compete against one of your friends as you both try to see who lasts the longest against the wave of balloons.

Brawlhalla

If you thought the fighting game crossovers of Super Smash Bros. were insane, just wait until you check out Brawlhalla. The 2D platform fighting game has got WWE wrestlers like the Rock and the Undertaker, Steven Universe and Adevnture Time characters, Ben 10 aliens, characters from The Walking Dead and G.I. Joe, and much more. You can gather your friends in fighting matches of 2v2 or a four-man free-for-all. It's the perfect fighting game for zoning out and letting off some steam.

You can download Brawlhalla on Steam. The game is also available on Android, iOS, Playstation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.

Rolling Champions

While the anticipated roller-blading shooting game Rollerdrome isn't free and still has yet to be released, fans of action-pakced rollerblading can check out Rolling Champions instead. This groovy game set in the futuristic 2032 has fairly simple rules: get possession of the ball and make a lap around the roller-rink to score a point. Only, the roller-rink isn't always as straightforward and tackling is allowed. This contact-sport video game will definitely have you and your friends trying to one-up one another at every turn.

Fishing Planet

The Philippines is an archipelago, yet how many of us can say they go fishing on a regular basis? Okay, while not actually fishing, Fishing Planet is pretty darn close to the real sport! With over 170 species of fish that interact with the environment differently depending on the season, time of day, water current, and more, you can tell the developers put care into crafting the world of fishing simulated in the game. We advocate everybody grab a couple of friends and say, "hey, let's go fishing!" before loading up this game and getting lost in its serenity. For an extra challenge, we'd even say you should invite your significant other's dad out on this particular "fishing trip." Dads love fishing, so let's see how he'd react.

Diabotical

On this list, we've seen jelly bean-shaped racers and swarms of enemy balloons, but now get ready for egg-shaped robots with futuristic guns. In Diabotical, you play as these egg-shaped robots in a first-person shooting game that traps you and your opponents (i.e. your friends in real life) in an arena where only one may come out victorious. It's a chaotic video game, to say the least.

You can download Diabotical on the Epic Games Store.

VALORANT

Loyal Spotters will know VALORANT is where the hype is at when it comes to online gaming in the Philippines. Don't let all the hyper-stylized graphics, abilities, and shooting fool you. It's a fairly simple game; one team of five players has to plant a bomb at a designated site on the map, while another team of five players have to prevent the bomb from going off. It's straightforward enough for anybody to hop on and at least try it, while mastering the various abilities of the game's colorful character roster is what keeps players invested for the long run.

Fortnite

While you've undoubtedly heard of Fortnite, one of the most popular games in the world for almost half a decade now, there definitely comes certain types of stigma with mere mentions of the title. Some think the game is too complicated due to the mix of shooting and building mechanics, while others think the cartoonish violence and inclusion of TikTok dances make the game silly and childish. However, people who actually give it a try may be surprised to find how addicting the gameplay is and how entertaining seeing your character do a Dougie after killing an opponent is.

Plus, more casual players can breathe a sigh of relief, as the game has implemented a few Zero Builds modes, so fans of plain third-person shooting games can enjoy Fortnite's gun gameplay without having to worry about their opponent building a whole apartment complex after hearing one shot.
