Biography

  • Mika, (born Michael Holbrook Penniman Jr. on August 18th 1983) stylized as MIKA is a Lebanese-British singer-songwriter, who is also the recipient of a BRIT Award.

Mika was born in Beirut. He is the third of five children born to a Syrian mother and an American father. He moved to London when he was nine years old. He attended St. Philip’s School in Kensington, where he was the head of the Schola Cantorum (the St. Philip’s Choir). He later attended Westminster School and the Royal College of Music, which he left to record his debut album at Casablanca Records.

A fun fact about Mika is that he is in fact multi lingual, being fluent in French and Spanish. In an interview on September 29th 2009, with The Chris Moyles Show on BBC Radio 1, he commented that he had taken Mandarin Chinese for 9 years but did not speak it very well.

His music career took off in January 2007 when Universal Music released his single “Grace Kelly” for digital download on January 8th 2007. It reached number one the UK Singles Chart on January 21st 2007. His debut album “Life in Cartoon Motion” was released on February 5th 2007, went multi platinum in almost ten countries, and brought comparison with artists such as Freddie Mercury, Scissor Sisters, Elton John, Prince, Robbie Williams and David Bowie. Later that year he toured the United States, with support from Sara Bareilles and Natalia Lesz. The following year, he received a BRIT Award for Best British Breakthrough Artist.

His follow up album “The Boy Who Knew Too Much” released on September 21st 2009, featured the singled “We Are Golden” which peaked at #4 in the UK Singles Chart. “Rain” was the second UK and German single, released on November 23rd 2009. It was the first single to miss the top 40.

“The Origin of Love” was a worthy follow up making it to the top 20 of over ten countries. Mika claimed that the album’s music style would include influences from Daft Punk and Fleetwood Mac.

Live reviews

  • Mika

Eccentric, buoyant, technicolour popstar Mika is a consummate showman. He burst into our lives with “Grace Kelly”, a ridiculously infectious falsetto-slathered chunk of power-pop perfection, and has remained a modern glam-rock merchant ever since, reeling off ornate ditties like “We Are Golden”, “Big Girl (You Are Beautiful)”, “Blame It On The Girls”, “Rain”, “Happy Ending” and “Lollipop”. Hooks galore, quirks by the bucketload and charm coming out the wazoo, there are few artists that are more entertaining to witness live. Known for frequently featuring a plethora of dancers, props, confetti cannons and bizarre constructions (such as enormous inflatable legs/feet), there's a Monty Python quality to his performances. He's not just there to reel off his songs and leave, he's there to provide a night of raucous, vaudevillian tomfoolery. An accomplished pianist, don't expect him to stand and sing – he frequently takes to his instrument of choice to tinkle. He also bounds around like a lithe puppy. Nowadays, you're more likely to catch him on the continent (his most recent album, Origin Of Love, featured songs in French, and is his third straight number one album in France), where he works on reality TV shows in Italy. However, should he make a grand return to the UK, be first in line for tickets – he's a performer you'll never forget.

  • Mika was a true British breakthrough of 2007 when his debut album 'Life In Cartoon Motion' topped the chart and went on to sell over five million copies. His animated and eccentric approach to pop was a breath of fresh air and although the follow-up could not match the commercial stature of the first, Mika continued to deliver the same high level of alt-pop.

Now having accumulated a fan base for both his original chart topping material and his lesser known 'The Boy Who Knew Too Much' and 'The Origin Of Love'. A Mika concert is less style and more substance, the staging is adorned with animated flames and bright design yet it is the charismatic singer who commands attention as he bounds onstage and rips into his first hit single 'Grace Kelly'.

He shows restraint throughout the long set during the balladic 'Stuck In The Middle' or fan favourite 'Happy Ending'. The fun factor is back during early tracks such as 'Lollipop' and 'Big Girls' which keeps the audience dancing and cheering. An act of variation and diversity, Mika is a classic performer and not just a cartoon gimmick.

  • Going to this concert was the best thing I have ever done. It was so amazing I can't describe it in words, but I will try anyway. His performance was so full of energy, he was jumping, running around and also dancing on the piano. He even made jokes all the time only that I couldn't understand most of it because I don't speak italian (I'm from Slovenia). And his singing is just perfect, he even sung the last part of happy ending without the mic and he also played many songs on the piano. I was just amazed. If he has a concert near you don't hasitate and buy the ticket you won't be disappointed. You can watch some of his perfomance on youtube just type Mika Trieste. Here are the songs he performed: no place in heaven, big girl, talk about you, billy brown, relax, good guys, we're young(kick ass),beautiful disaster, lollipop, staring at the sun, underwater, last party, happy ending, we are golden, stardust, love today.

  • The concert was fantastic and sold out, the support group which came on first called Xyraloo was also good, but nothing compared to the stage presence and the fantastic professional stage effects and lighting of the Mika show. He did a lot of talking and got a lot of audience participation in the most popular songs. I was further away than ever before in a Mika performance, but enjoyed it neverthless as the sound was very professional. He told us the concert was being filmed and broadcast in China simultaneously, and he was proud of that. The audience was very mixed with manyold and young and nationalities. It was a fantastic way to finish off my birthday on 5th June.

  • Hes *the* boy genius! Mika's performance was a-ma-zinggg!! The lights, the decoration, his never ending energy and that fabulous voice along with his beautiful songs! I was suffering from a severe bacterial food poisoning and almost wasnt going to be able to make it -- I'm sooooo glad I took the risk and went anyway! One of the best events I've attended so far!! It's not just a concert, it's a whole show and I definitely recommend whoever likes his music, do NOT miss a Mika concert!!

  • What a fantastic show! Great energy, very present, engaged, humble, and fun. He played his greatest hits (many from his first two album) and some new ones Loved the thoughtful way he ended the show too. Tickets to go see him in US are so much less expensive then they would be in Europe.

Definitely go see him if he is around in your area -- what a delight!

  • What an amazing show!!!!! Mika was such an entertaining performer and had a beautiful voice and energy. During one song he jumped into the crowd by himself and during another he silenced the crowd and sang without a microphone!! Every song was performed with equal enthusiasm. I had such a fun time I miss it already

He put on the most wonderful show that I have ever been to, his energy is infectious, they way he interacted with the crowd was outstanding, but most of all the surprises he added to his show were amazing - I felt truly blessed to have been there for it.
