Biography

  • Necro is a rapper hailing from Brooklyn, New York, United States who was born on June 7th, 1976. Since his debut, he has released six studio albums along with a host of mix-tapes, singles and extended plays, becoming one of the most notorious underground rappers alive in the process.

Widely considered to be the meeting point between the worlds of extreme metal and hardcore rap, Necro was born Ron Braunstein in Brooklyn, New York and by the time he was eleven, was already playing in his first band. The group was a death metal band called Injustice and while he carries a love of the heavy stuff with him to this day, he discovered a passion for hip-hop and began rapping in 1988, when he was a mere 12 years old. His first demo came in 1990, and by 1993 he was rapping full-time, he got his first slots on local radio stations in 1995 but it wasn't until 2000 that his debut album “I Need Drugs” was released on his own record label Psycho-Logical Records.

If the title of his debut record wasn't enough of a warning, Necro went on to have one of the most controversial careers in underground hip-hop, which is saying an awful lot. He considers sex, gore, violence and hard drugs to be among the key influences of his music, and it shows in every aspect of his work and his numerous pursuits away from the mic, including acting and film-making. As a result, he commands a huge cult fan-base, one whose devotion has seen him work with everyone members of metal bands like Lamb Of God and Megadeth, to rappers like Tech N9ne and Violent J. He's one of the most compelling characters in underground hip-hop, and for that, he comes highly recommended.

Live reviews

  • Necro

Despite his somewhat offensive and explicit lyrics, Necro had everyone singing along with his death rap/heavy metal from the moment he came on stage. It’s evident in his command of the stage and his awareness of every movement of the music that he began his career at a young age, At 11 he joined his first death thrash band as the guitarist, so although he mainly works now as a vocalist, his knowledge of instrumental operations assists him with his writing, and is evident in his performances.

He’s really well known for his multi-syllabic rhyme schemes in his tracks, and hearing him perform live made this even more evident through his accentuation of certain words in phrases. It was great, because it made the lyrics more memorable, and even in the tracks that I didn’t know so well, by the choruses I along with everyone else was singing along with Necro. It’s incredible to think that he’s a self taught musician, as his performance was incredible. He is a born performer, and was shouting to the audience ‘when I say hip hop you say kemp, hip hop kemp, hip hop kemp’, which was a great way to get everyone involved with the show.

He played mainly from Once Upon a Crime and SADIST HITZ so it was cool to hear some of the new material live. The fusion of metal and rap is refreshing, and even if it’s not a genre you enjoy listening to, you can appreciate the skill and musicality that contributes to this original sound. He gave a great performance, and I’m a huge fan of his style, so I’d definitely go back again!

  • I liked the show very much. It was real dope. Necro gives a real hard core set and keeps going till the crowd was fking hot. I like necro even more now. I first knew him only from tracks but this set makes me even like this shit more. It's nice necro gives the opportunity to the new generation, young syrup, he performed the pre show and the contrast in style was big. I frankly thought it was wack but yeah we can't expect everyone to be the new Necro!
