'Star Wars' Actress Carrie Fisher Dies at 60

Carrie Fisher, the iconic actress who portrayed Princess Leia in the original Star Wars trilogy, has passed away at the age of 60 after suffering a heart attack. The sad news was confirmed in a statement to People on Tuesday.

"It is with a very deep sadness that [Fisher's daughter] Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning," the statement read. Via the statement, Lourd said, "She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly. Our entire family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers."

Fisher reportedly went into cardiac arrest while on an airplane flying from London to Los Angeles on Friday, Dec. 23. Fisher, who was "in a lot of distress on the flight" according to a source, became unresponsive and was removed from the aircraft by paramedics. She was on tour promoting her book The Princess Diarist.

Tuesday, Fisher's mother, legendary actress Debbie Reynolds, thanked her Facebook followers for their support during this trying time. "Thank you to everyone who has embraced the gifts and talents of my beloved and amazing daughter," she wrote. "I am grateful for your thoughts and prayers that are now guiding her to her next stop. Love Carries Mother."

Fisher is best remembered for her role as the female lead in Star Wars. She debuted as Princess Leia in 1977's Star Wars Episode IV – A New Hope at the age of 19, and went on to star in the following two films, in addition to making a special appearance reprising her iconic role in 2015's The Force Awakens.

Fisher is survived by Lourd, Reynolds, and her cherished French bulldog Gary.
