Since the beginning of lockdown and the closure of everyone's favourite fast food restaurants, we've seen Pizza Express release their infamous dough balls and Margherita pizza recipe, Wagamama's share the 11 ingredients in their Katsu curry sauce, Pret publish their chocolate chip cookie recipe, and now, a chef has recreated McDonalds cult hash browns at home.
Following in the footsteps of many other lockdown dishes, this recipe only calls for two main ingredients – potato and egg –along with a couple of other store cupboard essentials like salt, pepper and oil.
Sharing the step-by-step cooking tutorial on her TikTok channel, Michelin-starred chef Poppy O’Toole (@poppy_cooks) shows viewers how to recreate the famous fast food breakfast at home, without the pesky 11am cut off time patrons have had to adhere to for years... Win win!

Ingredients
1 large potato
1 free range egg
Vegetable oil
Salt
Pepper
Directions
- Step 1Start by grating the potato into very thin slices using a cheese grater and then pat down with a piece of paper towel.
- Step 2Transfer to a clean tea towel to get rid of any excess moisture.
- Step 3Put a little bit in at a time and squeeze the living life out of it. You’ll be surprised by how much juice you get out of it.
- Step 4Crack an egg over the dry grated potato and season with salt and pepper, before mixing.
- Step 5Give it a good old mush and get it shaped in your hand.
- Step 6Add it to a frying pan on a medium to low heat. Only flipping when it’s got its signature golden brown shade.
- Step 7At the end - tilt the pan so the hash brown is covered in hot oil for extra crispiness.
