A robust ginger, native to humid forests the Himalayas in Nepal and Eastern India between 600 and 1200 m, that grows shoots to about 1.5 m tall with broad leaves and a terminal, rounded inflorescence with white, orchid-like flowers in late summer. It is an easy plant in cultivation and adapts well to many temperate as well as tropical climates. Under cool conditions it is deciduous in winter.
