Information

Time: From 1 hour to 5 days, Total Track Distance: 52 km

The Abel Tasman has always been a busy little beaver comparative to most New Zealand destinations. But traveller feedback shows that crowds are less of an issue and fewer people seem to be coming here. If you come here in peak season and want to get away from it all then it is still very possible. DOC have devised a cunning plan where only certain places get full at certain times. Ask about this and stick to one of the many secluded spots. Plus, if you make an effort to get to the quieter northern end of the National Park, or are travelling out of high season, then swing with the breeze and you are in for a real Abel Tasman treat. If you are unsure of embarking on this walk on your own, there are several experienced guiding companies offering great service. Enjoy!

It was very nice to see the bays from the water.

We saw lots of seals. On the boat trip back you see everything you have done.

We walked the 45km from Marahu to Bark Bay and back again.

Really beautiful place to walk. Not that easy to walk, but worth it!

Stunning views, cozy huts, lots of beautiful beaches for a swim.

We especially enjoyed the more remote part of the track, going from Totaranui to Whariwarangi.

The beach was huge and the track very pleasant.

Insects very loud! Found a lovely spot on the beach for a picnic and the views of the mountains and sea were really nice. Interesting tree growing out of a rock!

Nice walking track to the beach with trees that enclose the path and I really loved the crickets.

The beach was big and we watched the kayaks and boats while seeing the mountains in the background.

The trail was beautiful but challenging in parts.

Even though we crossed at low tide, we had to wade through a foot of water when crossing the inlet - and was not expecting that. The trail from Awaroa Hut to Lodge was poorly marked and frustrating!

I have done the track five years ago as part of a three day track, wanted to show this beautiful area to my husband.

Took a watertaxi to Torrent Bay and walked down to Marahau. Not easy while carrying a 20lb baby but SO worth it. Great beaches and awesome views.

We walked from Marahau to the Apple Tree Bay.

It was a lovely track with a little bit of a rainforest feeling. It is an easy walk for people with moderate fitness condition. It takes about three hours walk to the Bay and back.

We walked the Abel Tasman for three days and started in Marahau.

The walk was not really hard and you got some stunning views of some small beaches and coves. Sadly from time to time, it was really crowded but it was alright.

Beautiful 3-4 days of hiking from gorgeous beach to gorgeous beach.

Every pit stop is a little paradise. Stick to the smaller sites - less crowded and more secluded. Recommend a day kayaking to allow visits to smaller islands and see seals.

Did the walk in four days with a seven hour walk day in between.

Would have loved if someone at the i-Site could have told me that is is more about having short walk days while enjoying the beach but still was worth it!

Beautiful views, amazing beaches, easy walk, great facilities.

Only complaint is too many uneducated people about conservation, ecology etc. Need more informative 'Leave No Trace' education prior to the trip.
