For nine seasons, The Office delivered comic stories about life at a failing paper company. There were pranks, Dundies, and arguably above all else, the fairy-tale romance of prank-happy salesman Jim Halpert (John Krasinski) and sweet receptionist-turned-office administrator Pam Beesly (Jenna Fischer). But what if it was all a lie? Many people who buy into The Office fan theories are pretty sure Jim stepped out on Pam, all while he looked like America’s sweetheart.

Cheating sitcom couples aren’t anything new, but for some ardent viewers of The Office, it’s hard to swallow the idea that Jim cheated on his super-crush after finally getting to be with her. Maybe after all those years of pining for Pam and a brief dalliance with Karen Filippelli (Rashida Jones), Jim grew bored and began having affairs. If hearing that Jim could've cheated on Pam is like getting an arrow through your heart, you may want to take a moment and sing some acapella to cheer yourself up between each of these depressing Jim and Pam fan theories.

Jim Almost Admitted To Cheating On Pam At The Q&A

The final episode of The Office explores the lives of the cast members after the documentary airs. PBS hosts a Q&A panel, and an audience member asks Pam why she stopped trusting Jim.

While Pam speaks vaguely and doesn't provide many details, Jim comes to her defense.

    From Redditor /u/annyc:

Jim cuts her off. He awkwardly dances around what was going on, but says that it was his fault. He sort of implies that Pam was treated unfair in the editing and he was shown in a better light.

Pam also states during the Q and A that after nine years there are some things you just want to keep private. I think this is why, even when she and Jim are 'alone' during the finale she doesn't bring up the affair.

    The Cathy Simms Theory

Some of the biggest drama of Season 8 is built around Cathy Simms (Lindsey Broad), a temp who takes over for Pam while she's on maternity leave, and who openly states her intentions to seduce Jim.

She makes her move when they're together on a business trip in Florida.

Cathy comes up with a story about bed bugs in her hotel room, prompting her to hang out with Jim. On camera, he pushes Cathy away and gets Dwight (Rainn Wilson) to bust up the whole thing. Jim comes out looking like a good guy and a faithful husband.

But what if that wasn't the end of it? Maybe, once the crew went to bed, Jim hooked up with Cathy.

    From Redditor /u/Sarlax:

Everything we saw between those two was part of Jim's plan to have deniability.

There's Almost No Footage Of Jim's Time In Philly

In Season 9, Jim splits his time between Scranton and Philadelphia while working with Athlead, and his relationship with Pam is incredibly strained. But the documentary producers show very little of what Jim is doing.

Pam doesn’t seem like the kind of person who would be upset when her significant other chases his very attainable dream. Is something else going on?

    From Redditor /u/annyc:

The Producers have chosen to show only things directly relating to his relationship with Pam. Why don't we meet any of his new coworkers? Perhaps because he's flirting with one of them?

Jim Constantly Does Things Without Telling Pam

During the course of The Office, Jim secretly purchases a house for Pam and invests a lot of money into his friend’s sports marketing company before checking with her.

When Jim and Pam get married, he even plans a secret wedding on a boat in case their "real" wedding gets weird.

Though none of those things mean Jim cheated on Pam, they do point to Jim’s habit of doing things without telling his wife. He obviously has no problem concocting and carrying out plans behind Pam’s back. So what’s to stop him from cheating on her?

The Documentary Producers Wanted To Create A Specific Storyline

Some fans believe the fictional documentary crew on The Office knew Jim was cheating, but they kept everyone in the dark because they wanted to keep viewers invested in Jim and Pam's love story.

Does that mean they willfully neglected to show Jim's affair?

The producers depict Jim as a perfect dreamboat who knew he was going to marry Pam from the moment he met her. But maybe that’s just because they edited to make him the hero of the show. It's entirely possible the producers either refrained from including his worst moments or simply stopped filming Jim when he went on one of his hypothetical trysts.

    Jim Is A Sociopath

Is it possible there's a much darker side to Jim Halpert than anyone realizes? There's a theory he's actually a sociopath.

    From Redditor /u/furrrsurre:

Let's first look at what a sociopath is. Most of you probably think of some horrible murderer or guy on death row. But really the scary thing about sociopaths is they often know how to APPEAR like nice normal people. Charming even. But if you look at the DSM-V (people that define things for psychiatrists/psychologists) they define a sociopath as someone who is "anti-social" in terms of "not conforming to social norms." They use "deceitfulness, using lies, cons, and etc for personal gain or pleasure." They have "reckless disregard for others." They have "impulsivity," "aggressiveness," and "lack of remorse for actions" based on being indifferent to what happens because of their actions.

Jim Is Impulsive And Probably Made A Mistake

As the series goes on, Jim grows increasingly impulsive.

In Season 1, he mostly pulls harmless pranks on Dwight. By the end of Season 2, he decides to move to Connecticut to work at a different branch of Dunder Mifflin. In the Season 7 episode "Classy Christmas," Jim smashes a snowball into Dwight's face just because of one comment and, later that season, he straight up walks out of a conversation with Erin (Ellie Kemper) because it "wasn't interesting."

If this is the kind of thing Jim is doing on camera, it's not out of the question that he could randomly hook up with someone at a bar one night after work.

    Jim Is A Meticulous Planner

Beginning with the first episode, when Jim puts Dwight’s stapler in a Jell-O mold, it’s obvious the show’s floppy-haired protagonist puts his heart and soul into planning the pranks he plays on his co-worker.

But what if all his calculated scheming doesn’t end there?

If Jim can plan long-term pranks like gradually filling Dwight’s phone with nickels until he gets used to the weight or creating a fake family to convince Dwight he's been Asian the whole time, then Jim would have no problem working in a one-night stand or two while Pam is home with Cece.

    Everyone Cheats On 'The Office'

When people think about The Office, they usually think about Michael Scott (Steve Carell) acting like a goof or Dwight Schrute being Dwight Schrute. But they probably don't think about the fact that the characters are constantly cheating on each other.

Angela (Angela Kinsey) cheats on Andy (Ed Helms) and Dwight, State Senator Rob Lipton (Jack Coleman) cheats on Angela, Stanley (Leslie David Baker) cheats on both of his wives, and Donna (Amy Pietz) cheats on her husband with Michael.

Even if there's no footage of Jim cheating on Pam, there's still a good chance he did cheat on her because that's just what happens on this show.

Jim's Struggle With Mediocrity Makes Him Cheat

As Meghan Keane from The Awl explains, once Jim marries Pam and starts getting ahead in his job, things almost immediately go downhill:

Now that Jim has some power, we are slowly learning that he doesn’t know how to use it. As Jim struggles to succeed in the workplace, the show butts up against the depressing fact that he is not very good at his job... And as he uncomfortably settles into his partitioned office, Jim’s story is starting to resemble the worst purgatory of 30-something life.

This makes an excellent case for why Jim would've cheated on Pam: he was unhappy and seeking any kind of excitement. What better way to amp up the drama than by having an affair in a town small enough to get caught?

What Happened The Night Before Jim And Pam's Wedding?

In the two-part Season 6 episode “Niagara,” everything except for the pre-planned wedding ceremony on the boat is a complete disaster.

Michael sleeps with Pam’s mom, Andy attempts to do a split in a dance-off and tears his scrotum, and Pam ends up having to drive Andy to the hospital while Jim enjoys a wild night out with his pals. She calls Jim to see if he can help, but he's too drunk.

If Jim is a total cliché bro, then he may have gone to a strip club. If he was as drunk as he sounded, he might have even tried to get a little something extra before he became a married man.

Jim Seems To Know That Stripper's Number By Heart

When the women of Dunder Mifflin conduct a female-only meeting in Season 3, the men throw an impromptu bachelor party for Bob Vance of Vance Refrigeration and Jim sees an opportunity for a prank.

He hires a Ben Franklin impersonator for the women while Dwight gets a stripper for the guys.

Then in the series finale, Jim hires that same stripper to surprise Dwight at his bachelor party. It’s like he knows the phone number to the exotic dancer service by heart. Does Jim have a secret addiction to strip clubs?

Jim Might Have Hooked Up With Phyllis

Okay, this one is probably unlikely, but it's possible Jim could've messed around with Phyllis (Phyllis Smith). After all, Phyllis did steal Pam's all of her ideas for her planned wedding with Roy (David Denman).

What would keep her from trying to steal Jim?

This theory stems from a comment Phyllis made in Season 2. Although Jim and Pam didn't start dating until the end of Season 3, it could hint that Phyllis and Jim have a past.

    From Redditor /u/Theluckygal:

During 'sexual harassment' seminar, she asks if one-night stands are included in a rule requiring reporting office romances to human resources. The camera shows Jim with an amused look. It could also be interpreted as a guilty, got caught kind of look.
