Grim Fandango Remastered and Broken Age coming soon to Nintendo Switch

Double Fine celebrates 20th anniversary of a point-and-click classic

Grim Fandango Remastered is coming to Nintendo Switch soon, along with Broken Age, Double Fine announced yesterday evening at the E3 Coliseum.

The re-releases celebrate the 20th anniversary of the launch of Grim Fandango. It’s widely considered a standout among the PC graphical adventure genre that Tim Schaefer and LucasArts popularized two decades ago. The game draws on themes of film noir and Mexican folklore in telling the story of Manny Calvera, an altruistic “travel agent” helping souls on their journeys into the afterlife. Grim Fandango Remastered relaunched on PlayStation 4 and Windows PC in January 2015.

Broken Age was a return to that point-and-click tradition when it launched in 2014 and 2015 for PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One. It was one of the earliest and most visible successes on Kickstarter when Double Fine raised more than $3.4 million in a month to help develop it. It launched in two episodes, with the first act garnering the most critical appraisal.

Double Fine announced Grim Fandango Remastered and Broken Age for the Switch at last night’s Coliseum event, with Schaefer and Jack Black reading lines from Grim Fandango alongside Manny Calvera’s original voice actor, Tony Plana, and stars playing other roles from the game.

Grim Fandango featuring Jack Black

20 years ago Tim Schafer’s Grim Fandango released and became an instant classic of the adventure genre. At E3, the cast reunites for a one-night-only live reading of select scenes, live music from composer Peter McConnell, and very special guest Jack Black. Ask us your questions below!

A news release from Double Fine did not specify a launch date for the titles, only that they would arrive “in the coming months.”
