I love to see architecture built by the Roman Empire in countries outside of Italy. Pont du Gard in the south of France near Remoulins is a particularly fine structure from the reign of Augustus (c. 19 BC). There is new evidence however that suggests it may have been constructed later, around the middle of the first century AD. Either way, it is ancient, beautiful and very cool to walk through! Pont du Gard was part of a 30 mile aqueduct that serviced Nimes, delivering about five million gallons of water per day! There is absolutely no mortar in this tri-level bridge. Its stones (some weighing up to six tons) are cut so precisely and fit so perfectly that it was not necessary to use mortar of any kind.
