The iconic Italian singer Milva, who rose to stardom in the ’60s and ’70s died Saturday in her Milan home. She was 81.
Italy’s Culture Minister Dario Franceschini said in an announcement of her death that Milva’s voice “stirred deep emotions in entire generations.”
A cause of death has not been given.
In her long career, the singer who was born in 1939 as Maria Ilva Biolcati, sold nearly 80 million records and sold 173 albums.
Across Europe, fans of all backgrounds revered Milva. In Germany, France, and Italy, she received national awards. Her voice made it as far as South Korea where her following was large.
Italian President Sergio Mattarella said on Saturday that Milva was a “cultured, sensitive, and versatile interpreter, much appreciated aboard.”
Milva retired in 2010 after a singing career that lasted for over half a century. She lived in Milan with her daughter.
The Piccolo Theater Strehler in Milan said it would be holding a wake on Tuesday in the venue’s foyer. A private funeral will be held for family and friends.
