Franz Gertsch

New and Unknown

25.03.2017 – 13.08.2017

After Franz Gertsch made the whole basement level of the museum available during the past exhibition season for the large-scale retrospective of Pascal Danz’s works, our eponymous artist will now be showing paintings and woodcuts in gallery 1 and 2 as well as watercolours in the Print Room. In some cases they involve new and never-before-seen works.

The painting “Meer 2017” [Sea] (2016/17), which Franz Gertsch completed in January will be shown for the first time. Franz Gertsch’s occupation with the rough sea on a stormy day dates back to his earlier works relating to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer in the South of France. He already took up this theme again in a 2013 woodcut, in which, proceeding from a 1971 photograph, he varied a motif that he already employed in painting (“Saintes Maries de la Mer I – III” (1971 – 72)). The new painting, however, does not depict girls on the beach but rather an uninhabited atmospheric seascape in a free and dynamic painting style.

Another highlight is the new woodcut entitled “Winter” (2016), which will be shown for the first time in Burgdorf in a sequence of four coordinated colours. It involves four prints of a winter landscape familiar from the magisterial Four Seasons cycle (2007 – 11).

The theme of the landscape that is addressed in the two large galleries with paintings and prints is continued with a retrospective look in the Print Room. Curated by Rainer Michael Mason, Geneva, the presentation there concerns a selection of Franz Gertsch’s Scottish and never before exhibited Valais watercolours made by the artist during travels in the 1960s.

The exhibition was curated by Anna Wesle and Rainer Michael Mason in collaboration with the artist.
