A tiny Shetland pony has stunned its proud owners by unexpectedly giving birth to an even smaller 17-inch tall foal.

And the little one is already keeping them busy with her adorable antics.

David Reid had no idea that Cherry his miniature Shetland pony was pregnant because he thought she had failed to find a mate.

But on Monday, stable staff spotted a tiny creature stumbling around a field and realised what had happened.

The new arrival - who has since been named Toffee - stands just 17 inches tall and is one of the smallest foals David has ever seen.

He said: "I have been breeding them for 20 years and I have never seen anything like it.

"We all got quite a shock."

David, from Aberdeen, suspects when Cherry was reunited with the male horses "something special" must have happened.

He added: "She's got lots of character already for being so tiny. We went to catch her and she was kicking out, as if to say 'leave me alone'."
