Pair of letters signed signed by two of the most notorious SS officers to serve in Italy during World War II. Includes: HERBERT KAPPLER (1907-1978) German SS-functionary and head of police and security services (Sicherheitspolizei and SD) in Rome, responsible for the Ardeatine Massacre. Sentenced to life imprisonment yet escaped from prison shortly before his death. A.L.S. penned on both sides of a 12mo. correspondence card following a printed greeting thanking friends for their 'solidarity...in some quarters the desire for revenge seems to be perpetuating itself...'. Kappler adds in his hand friendly content, largely untranslated but sending thanks for gifts, and mentioning 'the end of life...'. WITH: WALTER REDER (1915–1991), Austrian SS commander and war criminal who served with the SS Division Totenkopf and the SS Division Reichsfuhrer-SS. He with this unit committed the Marzabotto Massacre in Italy in 1944. After the war, he was convicted of war crimes. T.L.S. as a prisoner of the Italians, 1p. oblong 8vo., Gaeta, Aug. 8, 1971, in German. He discusses efforts to free him being made by the Austrian Foreign Minister and his own efforts undertaken with the President and Foreign Minister of Italy. Reder would not be paroled 1985, after which he returned to Austria.
