Artesian aquifer scheme: a) water-bearing layer; b+c) impervious strata. An artesian aquifer is a well below the water table from which water emerges by itself. This can e.g. B. be the case in an enclosed hollow, but can also occur in other places where artesian confined groundwater occurs. In contrast to an artesian spring, an artesian well is always artificial, as it was created through a borehole or through a shaft. Wood engraving, published in 1893.

Historical view of the Jacob's Well - a deep well constructed from rock that has been associated in religious tradition with Jacob for roughly two millennia. The writings of pilgrims indicate that Jacob's Well has been situated within different churches built at the same site over time. By the 330s AD, the site had been identified as the place where Jesus held his conversation with the Samaritan woman. Today it is lacated inside an Eastern Orthodox church and monastery, in the Palestinian city of Nablus in the West Bank. Wood engraving, published in 1862.
