After two years together, notorious bachelor George Clooney has split from his Italian girlfriend, Elisabetta Canalis.
In a joint statement to People, the former couple says: “We are not together anymore. It’s very difficult and very personal, and we hope everyone can respect our privacy.”
Adds Canalis’ publicist, “It is a very personal and sad matter, and Elisabetta wants it to remain that way. She will be taking some time … and then will face the press. She has not authorized me to say when the split happened.”
Rumors of Clooney and Canalis’ romance began to circulate in July of 2009, though they didn’t make it official until September. In a recent interview with Italian magazine Chi, Canalis said, “I am a firm believer in marriage, in the future I will be married.” Clooney, on the other hand, has been vocal regarding his refusal to wed.
No word yet on what caused the sudden break-up. The two were spotted dining together in Italy just last week.
Clooney’s latest directorial project, The Ides of March, was recently announced as the opening film for the 68th Venice Film Festival on August 31st. Canalis last appeared in a recurring role on Leverage in 2010.
