If we could turn back time, Cher should've gotten the proper biopic treatment years ago. But good things come to those who wait.
On the night before her 75th birthday today, the iconic performer announced on Twitter that Universal Pictures is making a film about her life with a few of her past collaborators. Judy Craymer and Gary Goetzman, who produced both Mamma Mia! films (the second of which starred Cher) are behind the project. Oscar winner Eric Roth, who wrote 1987's Suspect starring Cher, as well as worked on films like Forrest Gump, A Star Is Born, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, is writing the screenplay. Cher will also produce the still-untitled film.
The news arrived in the singer and actress's signature, pleasantly chaotic tweet style (and between declarations of her plans to shower and a casual shout-out to Tracee Ellis Ross).
“Gary and I are thrilled to be working with Cher again and this time bringing her empowering and true life odyssey to the big screen. One cannot help but be drawn to and inspired by Cher’s larger than life talent, fortitude, unique wit, warmth and vision,” Craymer said, per Deadline. “Her unparalleled success in music film and TV have inspired generations. We could not be happier to tell her story to cinema audiences.”
There will be plenty of material to work with considering Cher's decades-long career, spanning from her beginnings working with Sonny Bono through her evolution into an Oscar, Emmy, and Grammy winner and flat-out legend. Her life was recently adapted for the stage with the 2018 Broadway production The Cher Show, which is expected to go on national tour this fall.
