Online games have graduated from being technicoloured, slow-moving (sometimes 2D) pastimes to having great graphics and becoming actual careers for people. One of the things that have made it possible -- the fact that pretty much every hand from 18 to 80 holds a smartphone. Now, more than ever, our phones have the capability to do the work of multiple devices. We're don't just mean basic things like a watch or a calculator; you can legit omit the need for a TV, a sound system as well as a DSLR camera, thanks to streaming apps, Bluetooth and portrait mode. And now, the thing your phone is going to put out of business is your gaming system -- be it the latest versions of the X Box and the Playstation, or the Wii, if you swing that way.

Earlier online games, even ones on our phones, consisted of basic stuff like Angry Birds or Temple Run. And who can forget Candy Crush? But times have changed, and now you can play blown out Battle Royale games on your phone.

5 online games you can play for free on your phone right now

But all that being said, what fun are games when you can't play with (read: defeat) your friends? Even so, making a plan to get your buds to come over for a session almost never materialises. So, to combat that, we have the next best thing: We found five games that work on your phone, regardless of its operating system. These will let you and your friends form a squad, (virtually) kill people and stock up on some mad ammo. Check them out here:

1. PlayersUnkown's BattleGround (PUBG)

This game took the internet by storm when it was first released for Windows back in 2017. Following its success, it became available on the Xbox One, and was created for iOS and Android in early 2018. Until last month, the Windows version had sold over 30 million copies and held a record peak concurrent player count of over three million, while the Xbox One version sold over five million. It currently occupies the second spot on India's Apple App Store and the 21st spot on the Google Play store. The game is being dubbed the defining game of the Battle Royale genre. What's more, the game is still unfinished.

2. Fortnite

Like PUBG, Fortnite was also first released on the PS4, Xbox One, Mac and PC. But it came to the app store before PUBG did. However, unlike PUBG, Fortnite has a more cartoon-like feel to it, whereas the former is more along the lines of realistic tactical shooter online games. The other key difference is, PUBG has a deep and precise selection of weapons, and is a slower game that focuses on striking at the right time. But in Fortnite, there is no defined range of weapons and the players need to move quickly. Other than that, you may also notice that PUBG's map size is more than that of Fortnite's. After the game experienced a day-long worldwide blackout last week, it was googled more than the term "Apple". However, this game is not available on the Google Play store.

3. Garena Free Fire

The thing that sets Free Fire apart from the other two games mentioned above is the duration. While each game on PUBG lasts for a good 25-30 minutes, you can get in and out of Free Fire within 10-15 minutes. A unique feature that Free Fire boasts of is the Death Race mode where only two players can participate. In this mode, one player rides a vehicle that runs on land and water, and the other person shoots opponents. But unlike its competitors, this game has always been a mobile-only one and is available on Android and iOS. It cannot be played on any gaming system. However, if your laptop functions on Android, you may be able to play the game.

4. Rules of Survival

Though this game has been dubbed a PUBG clone, it was released on mobile stores before PUBG. A key difference between the two is that Rules of Survival lets the player count go up to 120 players on a single map, which is more than most other Battle Royale genre online games. But this often leads to the server overcrowding and causes a lag on some phones. However, Rules Of Survival's app size is larger than PUBG, which causes it to take more time to download.

5. Knives Out

This game comes from the same parent company as Rules of Survival i.e. NetEase. So the differences between the two games are very few. But what does set Knives Out apart is that it lets you customize your controls more than RoS, and is more diverse in terms of its layout. Even so, players of both games say that Rules of Survival is a faster game. But that could also be so because it supports a larger number of players on a seemingly smaller map.
