Turmeric has a sweet smell similar to lemon and ginger with a flavor that's earthy and warm, followed by a peppery zest. Its edible rhizomes are harvested for the spice and leaves are often used to wrap and flavor meat and fish leaving no waste. Attracts butterflies to your edible garden! The turmeric plant begins flowering in the late summer while rhizomes are growing in the soil below and are very attractive to pollinators. The rhizomes and leaves can be harvested in the fall. Turmeric can be harvested in 8-10 months from time of planting, for best results we recommend allowing your turmeric plant to grow 9 to 10 months before harvesting. Thrives in containers both indoors and out. Because it's tropical in nature, turmeric prefers to be in an environment with sunny, warm humid conditions and moist, fertile, well drained soils. Turmeric can be brought indoors during winter months and enjoyed as a houseplant in a sunny window.
