The ninth and final season of Suits might have come out all the way back in September 2019, but it still often pops up in Netflix's Top 10, and has people talking about it for more than one reason. But did you know a Suits spin-off actually exists, and none other than Jessica Pearson takes centre stage?
Here's everything you need to know about Pearson, the spin-off from Suits.
What is Suits?
The first season of Suits premiered way back in June 2011, and followed Harvey Specter, one of New York's top lawyers, who hires a talent young college dropout, Mike Ross, despite his lack of actual qualifications.
The eight seasons that followed put the law firm they worked at in the spotlight, showcasing power battles between managing partners, tough cases and office romances - including, of course, Mike's relationship with Rachel, played by Meghan Markle.
What is Suits spin-off Pearson?
Suits spin-off Pearson follows Jessica Person (played by Gina Torres), the former managing partner of Pearson Specter Litt, who has left New York behind to move to Chicago. While there, the attorney becomes a fixer for the corrupt's mayor office, and must navigate the dirty politics that come with her hometown.
As the official synopsis explains, "Pearson centres around the world of recently disbarred NYC powerhouse lawyer Jessica Pearson (Gina Torres) as she adjusts to down and dirty Chicago politics."
Why did Suits come to an end?
Back in 2019, the show's creator Aaron Korsh insisted they had originally always planned for nine series, which ended up being the perfect length thanks to Meghan Markle and Patrick J. Adams (who played Rachel and Mike)'s departure from the show.
“During the course of season seven, as they were negotiating the cast’s contracts for two years, an unforeseen thing happened,” Korsh told Deadline. “You can never know that one of your stars is going to marry the Prince of England, and Patrick decided not to return, so we had a choice whether to keep going after season seven.
“We decided that the original plan was 16-episode season eight and a 10-episode season nine, let’s see if we can do that. And dovetailing that, Katherine Heigl called and she wanted to be involved in the show, and we thought it was a perfect way to help extend the franchise and make it to that end of season nine.”
Do any other Suits characters appear in Pearson?
No - while Gina Torres appeared as Jessica Pearson, the rest of the cast was all new. Bobby Novak played Morgan Spector, Chicago's mayor, Bethany Joy Lenz as Keri Allen, Chantel Riley as Angela Cook, Simon Kassianides as Nick D'Amato, and Eli Goree as Derrick Mayes.
