Canadian is part of a series of meticulous colored pencil drawings Schmidt has been developing for nearly a decade. Transposing the traditions of Renaissance Dutch master painters, Schmidt utilizes still life to reveal the flaws and beauty inherent in contemporary culture. In this case, a pink hollyhock flower in a Molson Canadian can becomes a moment in which the beer can, garbage once emptied, is saved from a state of detritus by a flower in full bloom—a flower that, itself, awaits inevitable decay. Schmidt’s gaze shifts between beauty and rot, collapsing the lives of the two objects into a poignant moment when both meet and become meaningful, if transitory, partners.
