Diagnostic Characteristics:
Simple, opposite leaves are 3-6" long and wide having 3 to 5 lobes, with veins impressed and a cordate leaf base. Leaves leathery and sometimes purplish on veins beneath. Terminal bud is plump and green and slightly pointed (similar to Acer platanoides). Samaras form tight angle of 60º (unlike Acer platanoides whose samara are virtually horizontal).
