statement

Thomas Hirschhorn was born in 1957 in Bern, Switzerland. He has been living and working in Paris, France since 1983.

Thomas Hirschhorn is widely regarded as a leading artist of his generation. Best known for his sculptural constructions produced from disposable mass manufactured goods, Hirschhorn gathers together references and imagery culled from popular media alongside the work of radical theorists such as Gilles Deleuze, Georges Bataille and Antonio Gramsci. Despite the high philosophical references though, his approach is always inclusive, characterized by his ‘Form-and Force-field’ that unites love, politics, aesthetics and philosophy. It is this mixture and interweaving of “high” and “low”, that made his work so powerful and strongly communicative. The use of a wide variety of techniques and media such as sculpture, video and collage, but also of everyday materials such as adhesive tape, cardboard, plastic, paper, and of visual material belonging to our media society, distinguishes his unique and highly recognizable style. The process of making remains visible and becomes a metaphor for the individual and collective struggle to establish equality: “Form is what gives ethic and clarity in the incommensurable, complex and chaotic world we are living in, today.” His works aim to stimulate the viewer to become aware of his visual baggage, to deal with his sensitivity and to feel the need for a critical thought elaborated with respect to the world of media and, more in general with respect to geopolitical reality and social conditions of contemporaneity.
