Hypoplasia or absence of the depressor anguli oris muscle and congenital abnormalities, with special reference to the cardiofacial syndrome1982 •
An asymmetrical crying facies due to hypoplasia or absence of the depressor anguli oris muscle (DAOM) was observed in 23 infants and children. The cases were divided into two groups. Group 1 consisted of 12 patients who had associated cardiac abnormalities. In group 2 were 11 patients who either had other non-cardiac abnormalities (6) or no other abnormalities (5). The associated cardiac anomalies recorded in the literature are reviewed and 2 infants in this series are reported with abnormalities not previously described. The results of chromosomal analysis have generally been found to be normal, although a patient in our series was found to have trisomy E (18). The incidence of hypoplasia of the DAOM in newborn infants in a maternity hospital hospital is assessed and was found to be lower than reported in other studies. It is concluded that a detailed and careful examination for congenital abnormalities should be carried out on every child with an asymmetrical crying facies.

Clinical and Anatomic Features of Acardiac Twins2004 •
Objective: To report 6 cases of acardiac twins, and to investigate prognostic factors that would lead to survival of the normal twin. Subjects and Methods: During a 9-year period from 1993 to 2001, 6 cases of acardiac twins out of 109,000 deliveries at the Maternity Center, Tunis, Tunisia were studied. Detailed inspection, X-rays, ultrasound and autopsies were performed. Results: Prenatal diagnosis was made in only 1 case at 33 weeks of gestation. Rudimentary cardiac tissue was observed in 2 of the 6 perfused twins, and the cephalic pole was less developed than other parts of the body. Severe agenesis or hypoplasia of the thoracoabdominal organs was commonly observed. Many limb malformations were observed, with arms the most affected. One of the pump twins was stillborn, 3 died between days 1 and 3 from respiratory distress, and 2 developed cardiac failure after birth and were treated with diuretics and digoxin, which led to a favorable outcome in only 1. The ratio of the weight of ...

Twin Pregnancy with Acardius Anceps2014 •
Acardiac twin is an anomaly unique to monochorionic multiple pregnancies, characterized by formation of malformed fetus with an absent or rudimentary (nonfunctional) heart. Acardiac twinning, often results from abnormal placental vascular anastomoses. A 20 year old primigravida admitted to the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology S .S. Medical College, Rewa, on 26th July 2012 at the gestation of 34 week with spontaneous monochorionic monoamniotic twin pregnancy and fetal acardius with oligohydramnios. Patient was taking her treatment from private Hospital; acardius was diagnosed at 27 week due to late booking. In view of oligohydramnios and hypoxic changes in color Doppler, elective LSCS was done on 28/7/13 at 34 week 2 day, after betnesol coverage. She delivered a live, healthy, female child with good APGAR score having apparently no congenital anomaly, with a birth weight of 2.3 kg .The other twin was fetus acardius, of about900 gm. with head and face partially developed . Uppe...

Mirror Syndrome in Monochorionic Twin Pregnancy with Acardiac Fetus2018 •
We report the case of a 20-year-old patient, primigravida, with twin monochorionic pregnancy, with a weight gain of 6 kg in one week and increased blood pressure. During the ultrasound diagnostic investigation, placental edema and hydrops were identified in both fetuses, which, in association with maternal anasarca and pressure control, constitute the triad for mirror syndrome, also known as triple edema. In addition to being hydropic, one of the twins was an acardiac fetus, which is a rare combination of events. Gestation was terminated at 22 weeks and five days because of high maternal risk. The patient progressed with clinical and laboratory improvement. Our study is relevant in that it documents an extremely rare case and discusses relevant aspects of the symptoms and diagnosis of mirror syndrome. It also systematically reviews the condition.
