Hydrosalpinx: causes, symptoms and ayurvedic treatment-Aasha Ayurveda

What is hydrosalpinx?

The uterus has two fallopian tubes; one on the right and another on the left. And it also has two ovaries on both sides. The fallopian tubes collect eggs from the ovaries and transport them to the uterus.

Each month, the ovary releases an egg (ovulation) which is collected by a fallopian tube. As the egg passes through the fallopian tube, it also waits for sperm for fertilization. If it is fertilized by sperm, conception takes place. But the fallopian tube is not the place for its complete growth. Therefore, it has to travel to the uterus (the womb).

If the egg is not fertilized by sperm, it is taken out of the body during the menstruation period. In each menstruation cycle, an egg is collected by the fallopian tube. But the tube can become blocked due to damage or infection.

When the fallopian tube is blocked and filled with water (fluid), this medical condition is diagnosed as hydrosalpinx.

What are the causes of hydrosalpinx?

There are various causes that are considered responsible for hydrosalpinx, but an old, untreated infection is considered the most common cause of it. The fallopian tubes have finger-like projections, called fimbriae, at the end, near the ovaries. Fimbriae collect eggs from the ovaries, but they can block off due to an infection or other reasons.

Due to their closing off, they can retain fluid in them. Even if they are open, fluid can still get trapped in some part of the tube, which will obstruct the passage of the egg and sperm. Other causes could also be responsible for hydrosalpinx.

  • Severe adhesions in the pelvis
  • Fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • STDs
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Scar tissue
  • A scratch or injury during surgery
  • A previous ectopic pregnancy

What are the symptoms of hydrosalpinx?

As far as hydrosalpinx symptoms are concerned, basically, it has no symptoms. If it causes infertility issues, the patient can get to know about this medical condition after going through a diagnosis.

Chronic pain in the pelvis could be a symptom of it that a few women may experience. Some may also experience an increase in pain during their periods.

How can it be diagnosed?

There are tests to diagnose hydrosalpinx. They are:

  • An ultrasound
  • Hysterosalpingogram (HSG)
  • Laparoscopy
  • An MRI

How is hydrosalpinx treatment done?

In the modern medicinal system, hydrosalpinx tube is repaired or removed through surgery. And In-vitro fertilization (IVF) is suggested for pregnancy. Surgery and IVF carry their potentiality, but they both also have their risks.

Surgery and IVF are not always successful and can also leave mild to severe side effects. There is a risk of infection in both of them. IVF can cause multiple pregnancies or premature birth or low birth weight.
