Athlon 3000G box gets a makeover

The new box is bigger, has a new fan and no longer advertises “Vega” graphics.

The AM4 socket has been around for a long time already, long enough to see support for some now ancient Athlon CPUs. The Athlon 3000G is a dual-core CPU with built-in Radeon Vega 3 graphics. AMD has effectively pushed the Athlon branding to the lowest tier, which served as the alternative to cheap Ryzen CPUs.

With AMD moving to AM5 socket, it is understandable that second-hand market and cheaper Ryzen 1000-5000 CPUs will now take priority for users when choosing the AM4 processors. Yet, AMD believes that a new box and new cooler for the Athlon 3000G CPU will turn the tide for the Athlon brand somehow.

The refreshed Athlon 3000G is not the same as the original, it uses a new die called Dali. The original 3000G CPU is based on Raven Ridge, and the primary difference is the lack of support for Windows 11 on the original version. The only way to distinguish both CPUs is by comparing the boxes physically or by looking at the product code (OPN), for Dali version that’s YD3000C6FHBOX and Raven Ridge that’s YD3000C6FBBOX. More importantly, the new packaging comes with a new OPN code as well, which is YD3000C6FHSBX.

Those who, for whatever reason, will require a dual-core CPU in 2023 will be happy to hear that this CPU is equipped with a brand-new Wraith Stealth cooler. Maybe this will be a cheap way to buy a cooler. The original version, without a doubt, didn’t have the same fancy look and the packaging was less appealing. However, by uniforming the size of the box for all Ryzen and Athlon CPUs, AMD will have less of a worry with shipping these CPUs in bulk to distributors.

Since it was released, the AMD Athlon 3000G has a MSRP of $49, but some retailers list it at a higher price. This version is not yet available in western countries, but it is already available in Latin America and Asia.
