Khajuraho Temples: Going beyond the erotic sculptures

Built by Chandela rulers, the Khajuraho temples are among the most popular historical places in the country that one should definitely visit once in a lifetime. It is believed that around 85 temples were built originally, but only 23 managed to survive the destruction over the time. While it is popularly known for erotic sculptures, here we take you to temples in Khajuraho that also feature prominent sculptures and are a sight to behold.

Devi Jagdamba Temple

It’s one of those temples in Khajuraho that is intricately designed and decorated. Built between 1000 and 1025 CE, by one of the Chandela rulers, the temple is divided in three bands - the first one features sculptures of Brahma, the second band features stone-carvings of Lord Shiva, whereas the third one is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. A visit to this place will also give you a glimpse of an incredibly beautiful idol of Goddess Parvati.

Parsvanath Temple

It’s the largest Jain temple in Khajuraho, constructed in the 10th century during the rule of Dhangadeva. If records are to go by, It was previously dedicated to Adinath, the first saint of the Jains. But, in 1860, the image of Parsvanath was installed in the temple, and thereby its name Parshvanath. The temple features sculptures of elephants, sea nymphs, lions, and images of Vaishnav gods.

Brahma Temple

It’s one of the oldest temples in Khajuraho, and belongs to the Eastern Group of Temples. Sitting on the banks of Khajur Lake or Khajuraho Sagar, it’s believed that although the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, owing to the presence of four faced linga in the sanctum, it has been named after Lord Brahma. As per the records, the local worshippers mistook it for a sculpture of Lord Brahma with four faces, hence, it has been incorrectly named.

Chitragupta Temple

It’s one of the most important temples of Khajuraho, dedicated to the Surya Dev or Sun God. Adorned with beautiful carvings depicting erotic poses, you will also get to witness incredible images of Lord Vishnu on the walls of Chitragupta. It’s a 11th century temple, and is a bit similar to Jagdambi temple.

Chaturbhuj Temple

Built in 1100 AD, Chaturbhuj Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and is located around 3 km from Jattari Village. The highlight of this temple is its 9 ft tall idol of Lord’s Chaturbhuj, the spectacular entrance porch, mandapa, and a sanctum. One can also witness erotic carvings on the wall, which further add to the beauty of this place.
