      Wilson Disease

Wilson disease is a hereditary condition in which the body cannot remove excess copper, resulting in a copper build-up in the liver, brain, eyes, and other organs. High copper levels, if left untreated, can result in life-threatening conditions like liver damage.

      Causes and Symptoms:

Wilson illness manifests itself in a variety of ways. The symptoms could be caused by problems with your liver, nervous system, or mental health, as well as your eyes or other organs. Gene mutations cause Wilson disease.

      Diagnosis:

Wilson disease is diagnosed by a doctor based on your medical and family history, a physical examination, an eye examination, blood tests, and urine testing. Your doctors may also perform a liver biopsy and imaging tests.

      Treatment:

Wilson disease is treated with chelating drugs and zinc. Wilson disease patients require lifelong treatment to manage their symptoms and lessen or avoid organ damage. A liver transplant may be required if Wilson disease causes acute liver failure or cirrhosis with liver failure.

      Eating, Nutrition, and Diet:

If you have Wilson disease, discuss your diet and copper-containing foods with your doctor. If you have Wilson disease, your doctor may advise you to avoid foods high in copper, such as chocolate, liver, mushrooms, nuts, and shellfish, when you begin therapy.
