Description

It’s back! Agave ovatifolia, the one and only Whale’s Tongue Agave! An incredible landscape plant for the desert southwest, Agave ovatifolia can grow to 3 feet tall and 5-6 feet across. The huge, silvery blue leaves are nearly 3 feet long and 1 foot wide, concave above, and look like a whale’s tongue, at least as I imagine what one would look like. Use Whale’s Tongue Agave as a focal point in a landscape full of drought tolerant plants. It has a spectacular form that commands attention, so give it a special spot and supplement with low growing, flowering perennials and small shrubs in a fun filled, colorful landscape. Try using Chrysactinia mexicana, Dalea frutescens, Ericameria laricifolia, Salvia greggii and Verbena gooddingii for their colorful flowers and rich green foliage, and Penstemon parryi or Penstemon superbus for their spectacular spring display of pinkish and coral flowers that contrast with the silvery blue foliage of Whale’s Tongue Agave.
