Photos, musings, and flashes of brilliance from the staff at The Ruth Bancroft Garden

Agave ovatifolia

Many people are amazed to find that a plant as striking as this one would have waited until 2002 to be given a scientific name, but this is because it comes from a remote mountain-top far from any paved road. We have planted quite a few of them at the Ruth Bancroft Garden, but this is the first one to flower, so this is a special occasion for us (even though we know that it will die once the flowering is over). If you live near to the garden, we encourage you to come see it; we anticipate that it will be in flower until late May. From the state of Nuevo Leon in northeastern Mexico.
