Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease

Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) was discovered in 1886 and named after the three doctors who aided in its discovery: Jean-Marie Charcot, Pierre Marie, and Howard Henry Tooth.

According to the CMT Research Foundation, this condition is a nerve disease that affects 1 in 2,500 people. While it is less commonly known than other diseases, it actually affects more people than other widely-known nerve conditions, such as ALS or cystic fibrosis.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth is caused by gene mutations that result in abnormal peripheral nerves. To learn more about CMT and how our physical therapists at our Hampton office can help you find relief, contact Peninsula Physical Therapy & Associates, Inc. today.

Are you experiencing these symptoms?

There are common signs of CMT that may present as early as infancy. For example, if it takes a baby longer than most to reach physical developmental milestones, that may be an early sign of CMT.

Common symptoms of CMT that present in adulthood include:

  • Shrinking hand muscles
  • Weak grip strength, usually resulting in frequently dropped items
  • Difficulty in finding shoes that fit correctly
  • High arches and curled toes (also known as “hammertoes”)
  • Frequent tripping and/or falling
  • Very skinny legs
  • Weak ankles that tend to buckle/give out underneath you
  • Poor circulation in the feet and/or difficulty feeling them

If you are experiencing any or all of these symptoms, it is a sign that you should likely be seen by one of our physical therapists at our Hampton office. From there, we will design a personalized treatment plan to fit your specific needs.

Some less common symptoms of CMT to look out for also include:

  • Sleep apnea
  • Difficulty with swallowing and/or frequent choking
  • Hearing loss
  • Scoliosis
  • Breathing problems, due to weakness from respiratory muscles
