The Santa Clause premiered in 1994 and quickly became a perennial holiday favorite. The movie follows a recently divorced father, Scott Calvin (Tim Allen), as he’s unexpectedly enlisted to become the new Santa. From rapidly gaining the mythical character's trademark jolly belly to growing a snow-white beard and more, Calvin's journey to embracing his new destiny is both comical and heartwarming.

The film, while centered around Santa, is also beloved for its memorable cast and characters — from elves like Bernard (David Krumholtz) and Judy (Paige Tamada) to Scott's son, Charlie (Eric Lloyd).

The Santa Clause had two sequels: The Santa Clause 2 (2002) and The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause (2006). In 2022, the movie franchise was turned into a streaming series on Disney+ titled The Santa Clauses, which now has two seasons.

The series has been well-received, but according to actress Casey Wilson, working with Allen was no walk in the park.

“It was truly [the] single worst experience I've ever had with a costar ever," she said on her podcast, Bitch Sesh, adding that the cast and crew "walk[ed] on eggshells" and "looked frantic" when the actor was around.

Almost 30 years later, here’s what the cast of The Santa Clause movie franchise is up to now.

Tim Allen played Scott Calvin, who, in the original film, transformed into Santa Claus. Since then, Scott has remained the reigning Santa in the sequels and the Disney+ show.

Before becoming Santa for the popular franchise, Allen was a successful stand-up comedian. His first major acting role before The Santa Clause was starring as Tim Taylor in the hit sitcom Home Improvement from 1991 to 1999.

Apart from the holiday comedy and its follow-ups, Allen went on to voice Buzz Lightyear in the Toy Story franchise. He also starred in movies like Galaxy Quest (1999) and Wild Hogs (2007) before landing another starring sitcom role in Last Man Standing, which aired from 2011 to 2021.

The following year, Allen reprised his role as Scott for The Santa Clauses. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, he shared what it was like to don his iconic Santa suit again.

"When I show up dressed in the full suit and everything else, there's big smiles on people's faces. ... I had totally forgotten that. It does feel like Santa's in the room,” he said.

The latest Santa Clause project is also special to Allen because he’s working alongside his daughter Elizabeth Allen-Dick, who plays his daughter in the show as well.

Allen spoke to PEOPLE in October 2022 and revealed the advice he gave her before filming began. “The writers, producers and crew have the most important roles on a production," the actor said. "Being an actor is a wonderful craft but we are just a part of a teamwork experience."

Along with Elizabeth, who was born in 2009, Allen also has an older daughter, Katherine Allen, born in 1989. He welcomed his first child with then-wife Laura Deibel, who formally separated from him in 1999. Elizabeth was born to Allen and his current wife, actress Jane Hajduk, whom he married in 2006.

Beyond his work as Hollywood's favorite fictional Santa, Allen may reprise his role as Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story 5, according to a recent interview with Jimmy Fallon.

Eric Lloyd played Scott's son, Charlie Calvin, in the popular Christmas movie. Thanks to his pure heart and eagerness to explore, he's integral in helping his dad transition into his role as Santa.

Lloyd reprised his character for The Santa Clause 2 and The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause and later returned for a 2022 episode of The Santa Clauses.

In a 2017 interview with ABC News, Lloyd revealed that he had to wear fake teeth while filming the first movie because his baby teeth were falling out, and he had accidentally knocked out his two front ones. The off-screen incident also caused a few production changes.

“I was getting to that age where my teeth were falling out,” the actor said. “So my bottom two teeth throughout the whole film are all fake teeth, because [they] fell out naturally at the beginning of the film.”

Throughout the '90s and 2000s, Lloyd continued landing major roles. He starred as a young Bruce Wayne in 1997’s Batman and Robin and appeared on the ABC sitcom Jesse alongside Christina Applegate.

Per his website, Lloyd graduated from Chapman University, where he studied film production. His passion grew into sound and post-production, skills he used when he was the sound mixer for the TV series Holding and Sisters. Today, Lloyd owns a production studio and does vocals and guitar for the band Radio Mason.

Wendy Crewson played Laura Miller, Scott’s ex-wife who marries psychiatrist Neil Miller after their divorce. Initially, she doesn’t believe that Scott is becoming Santa — a disbelief further fueled by Neil’s career in mental healthcare.

As a Canadian native, Crewson held roles in various Canadian shows and films before making it big in Hollywood. Her first major hit at the global box office was in 1993’s The Good Son, which also starred Macaulay Culkin and Elijah Wood. The following year, she starred in The Santa Clause and would later reprise her role in both sequels.

Crewson also appeared opposite Harrison Ford as America’s first lady in Air Force One in 1997. She was later cast in several hit series, holding a recurring role in Revenge and starring in Saving Hope and Departure.

Off-screen, Crewson was married to actor Michael Murphy from 1988 to 2009, and together they had two children, Maggie and John.

In 2014, the actress publicly came out as gay. She told Global News in 2015 that her son’s reaction to her personal news was powerful. “The first thing he said to me was: ‘You are so brave. That must have been so scary to tell me,’ ” Crewson recalled. “It makes me emotional even when I think about it.”

Despite not being involved in The Santa Clauses reboot, she has stayed active in Hollywood. In 2023, she starred alongside Elliot Page in the movie Close to You.

In The Santa Clause, Judge Reinhold played Laura’s new husband, Dr. Neil Miller, a psychiatrist who becomes worried about Charlie, thinking that Scott has had a nervous breakdown and disillusioned his son with lies.

Before appearing in The Santa Clause, Reinhold had already made a name for himself on the silver screen. He starred in the massively successful Beverly Hills Cop trilogy (1984-1994) alongside Eddie Murphy and appeared in other comedies, like Stripes (1981) and Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) with Sean Penn.

He even hosted a taping of Saturday Night Live in 1988 and was a guest star in an episode of Seinfeld in 1994. Reinhold also reprised his role as Dr. Miller in both Santa Clause sequels.

In his personal life, Reinhold has been married twice. He wed his first wife, Carrie Frazier, during the '80s and tied the knot with his current wife, movie director Amy Miller, in 2000. Together they have a daughter, Haley, who was born in 2013.

In late 2022, it was announced that the actor was returning for the fourth Beverly Hills Cop movie.

David Krumholtz stole the show as head elf Bernard. Thanks to his wit and attitude, Bernard was funny and in charge, especially when Santa needed help the most. Krumholtz also reprised his role in The Santa Clause 2 and a 2022 episode of The Santa Clauses.

Since starring in the iconic Christmas franchise, he has continued acting in numerous blockbuster hits, including 10 Things I Hate About You (1999) and Superbad (2007) and portrayed Goldstein in all three Harold & Kumar films (2004-2011).

Krumholtz also appeared as a lead in the popular CBS crime drama Numb3rs for all six seasons (2005-2010). In 2023, he portrayed physicist Isidor Rabi in the biopic Oppenheimer, which became one of the highest-grossing movies of the year.

In his personal life, Krumholtz has been married to actress Vanessa Britting since 2010 and together, they have two kids: Pemma, born in 2014, and Jonas, born in 2016.

Krumholtz was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2011 and declared cancer-free after radiation therapy. The actor posted on Instagram in 2021 to commemorate a decade of being cancer-free.

He shared that he found out about the tumor while receiving a massage and thanked the masseuse who found it. “Had Bethany not discovered the lump, I’d have no children, I’d be gone," he wrote.

The actor is returning to television for the series spinoff of the raunchy animated film Sausage Party. Krumholtz will be joined by Kristen Wiig, Seth Rogen and Will Forte, among others.

Born in 1985, Tamada was just 9 years old when The Santa Clause premiered but she already had a few titles on her résumé, having first worked with Allen on a 1993 episode of Home Improvement.

She also had guest roles on popular shows, including Seinfeld, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Ally McBeal, which served as her final acting credit until The Santa Clauses in 2023. Tamada reappeared in the franchise, playing a coffee stand owner in an episode of the series' second season.

The actress was involved in a 2011 featurette on The Santa Clause for Biography and joined by other cast members, who revealed behind-the-scenes stories about their time making the movie.

In the special, she recalled her and Lloyd being good friends on set. “Eric and I were really a pair, we spent a lot of time together,” Tamada said. “We would make forts together, and we ran around in towel capes. Probably very embarrassing, but we were little.”

Elizabeth Mitchell joined the cast in The Santa Clause 2, in which Scott discovers another clause in his contract ... he needs to find a Mrs. Claus. Mitchell plays Carol Newman, who eventually falls in love with him and becomes Mrs. Claus. She reprised the role in the third film and the Disney+ series.

Mitchell was born in Los Angeles, and before landing her role in The Santa Clause 2, she was best known for the '90s soap opera Loving and the drama ER. She later scored notable roles in numerous hit sci-fi series, like Lost, Once Upon a Time and Outer Banks.

In 2022, before the premiere of The Santa Clauses, Mitchell spoke to Resident magazine about how much fun she had returning as Mrs. Claus and working with Allen again.

“We were given the opportunity to improv a few scenes,” the actress said. “When you tell Tim Allen there are no rules, the energy and creativity is infectious. It was so nice to be back and yes being the wife of Santa is certainly something special.”

From 2004 to 2013, Mitchell was married to actor Chris Soldevilla and they welcomed a son in 2005.

Beyond The Santa Clauses, Mitchell is slated to star in Possum Trot, a film based on the true story of a small Texas town with mostly Black residents who decide to adopt a large group of foster kids.

The Santa Clause 2 was Mumy’s first major role, and since then, she’s become a successful voice actress, bringing to life cartoon characters, like Higglytown Heroes, Bravest Warriors and the hit Nickelodeon series The Loud House.

Before she was committed to voice acting, Mumy appeared in another iconic family movie franchise, Cheaper by The Dozen, with Steve Martin.

Mumy’s father, Bill Mumy, was also a child actor, starring as Will Robinson in the original Lost in Space series. In 2003, the father-daughter duo teamed up to costar in an episode of The Twilight Zone. He’s one of the North Pole’s bookkeepers and protects Santa’s handbook, which ultimately reveals that Scott needs to find a Mrs. Claus. Breslin reprised his role in the third film as well.

Before coming on board for the holiday comedy, Breslin had his breakout role in the 2000 film The Kid, where he starred alongside Bruce Willis. Breslin was in other hit movies during the 2000s, like The Cat in the Hat (2003) and The Happening (2008). In recent years, he has appeared in smaller independent films, including Some Kind of Hate (2015).

Breslin’s sister Abigail is also a famous actress known for movies like Little Miss Sunshine and My Sister's Keeper. The actor was briefly married to activist Grace Tame — the two wed in 2017 but divorced soon after.

Martin Short joined the franchise in the third film, The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause, portraying the wry and nefarious Jack Frost — but he was a famous comedic actor long before that.

His first big break was the sketch series SCTV in 1982, and he later joined the cast of SNL for a season in 1984. He also appeared in successful films, like Three Amigos (1986) and Father of the Bride (1991).

Short’s career has seen a resurgence in recent years, though. He landed recurring roles in The Morning Show and Schmigadoon! in 2019 and 2021, respectively, but is best known for his work in Hulu's comedy-mystery Only Murders in the Building, where he acts alongside Martin and Selena Gomez. The series has earned Short four Primetime Emmy nominations.

Off-screen, Short was married to actress Nancy Dolman from 1980 until her death from cancer in 2010. The actor told AARP The Magazine in 2019 that he feels she is still a part of his life.

"Our marriage was a triumph, so it's tough. She died in 2010, but I still communicate with her all the time," he said. “I believe that when people die, they zoom into the people that love them. The idea that it just ends, and don't speak of them — that's wrong … to me, she's still here.”

Before her death, the couple welcomed three children: Katherine, a social worker; Oliver, a production assistant; and Henry, a veterinary assistant.
