Rubella

• Etiology: togavirus is a neurotropic virus which replicates in placenta causing meningoencephalitis / vasculitis -> ischemia and microcephaly
• Imaging Musculoskeletal:
  — Metaphyseal fraying and longitudinal alternating radiolucent and radiodense stripes (“celery stalking”)
• Imaging Neurological:
  — Early infection – near total brain destruction, microcephaly
  — Later infection – ventriculomegaly, myelination abnormality, patchy frontal periventricular signal abnormalities (similar to cytomegalovirus), basal ganglia calcification, cystic changes
• DDX:
• Complications:
• Treatment:
• Clinical: often results in hearing loss as well as cataracts / glaucoma / retardation
