Red elderberry, Red-berried elder, Scarlet mountain elder, Bunchberry tree shrub (lat. Sambucus racemosa)

A highly branching shrub (sometimes a small tree) with a height of one and a half to three and a half (five) meters with erect stems.
The bark is grayish-brown; in young plants it is smooth, in old plants it is flaky. On the surface of the stems there are whitish-colored bumps (the so — called "lentils"); they consist of loose tissue through which air can pass, and serve as vents in the tested cover-through them the living tissues of the branches breathe.
Elderberry branches are very brittle. This is due to the fact that there is very little wood in them: a significant part of the volume is occupied by a loose core. The color of the core is brownish.
Young leaves often have a dark red or purple color. The leaves have a strong characteristic unpleasant smell.
The flowers are small, bisexual, odorous, collected in dense oblong paniculate inflorescences of egg-shaped or conical shape with a diameter of up to 20 cm. All the flowers are on pedicels (unlike black elderberry, whose marginal flowers are sessile). The perianth is double, five-membered. The corolla is wheel-shaped, whitish-yellow or greenish-yellow. There are five stamens. Flowering occurs in May — June simultaneously with the opening of the leaves, annually and abundantly, for 15 days.
The fruit is a drupe of red (bright red) color about 5 mm long, with a light yellow stone. The fruits ripen in July-August; they have an unpleasant smell and taste.
