designing track plans for semi or realistic operations?

I have been watching a lot of HO videos of great layouts where the owners focus the layout and track plan and on the trains and train operations. some have dispatchers pannels and staging yards. some even have mushroom layouts that are very impressive. they look at it as a giant game if you will. assigning jobs to the various operators who come over to run there layouts. that got me to thinking with our scale o gauge trains with nice speed contol,sounds,and realistic details we have now compared to the toy trains of the past. how many people here have layouts that are designed for realistic train operations vrs. just trains going around and around through nice scenery ?

Roger, you might find this design interesting. I did this design for a forum member (Rick), working collaboratively with him and with advice and critique from other forum members. It has two towns with industries that can complement each other, and a central large yard and engine facility; and a third elevated main with a few industries as well. The plan was designed for operation and train running.
