Leptospira interrogans

An infernal spiral

Leptospira interrogans is a spiral-shaped bacterium of the spirochete1 family, like Treponema pallidum, the agent of syphilis and Borrelia burgdorferi, the agent of Lyme disease.

Freshwater risk

This bacterium is a zoonosis usually acquired through exposure to river or lake water contaminated by the urine of rodents or other infected animals. Leptospirosis is observed in many countries around the world and usually presents as a severe febrile state, often with kidney and liver involvement. Due to the severity of this disease, medical consultation for antibiotic treatment is necessary.
