Columbus monument in Barcelona

Built at the 1988 World Exposition

The Monument a Columbus was established in honour of the discoverer of America, Christopher Columbus. In 1493 Columbus was received by King Ferdinand II in Barcelona after he returned from America. The monument is opened since June 1st, 1888.

The in Corinthian style made pillar is located on the Plaça del Portal de la Pau at the southern end of the Rambla. High up on the Monument is the actual monument, a statue of Colom, which shows the direction of America.

The approximately 60 meter high elevator ride to the viewing platform of the Monument a Colom is not a must see for tourists. It has a beautiful view of the Ramblas, the yachting port of Barcelona in Port Vell and in the shopping centre Maremagnum. However, if you have little time and you don't have enough time for a trip to the Tibidabo or Montjuïc, then you should enjoy the view from the Monument of Colom.

The Columbus monument was built at the 1888 World Exposition. After reconstruction works, the monument was reopened in June 2013.

Christopher Columbus

The discoverer of America was probably born in 1451 in Genoa. America was already entered 500 years earlier by the Icelanders as first Europeans, but in history he is the discoverer of the continent. With his travels a permanent colonization of the continent and also oppression and destruction of the natives began.

Initial order for his trip was to find a sea route from Europe to East Asia. He himself believed to be landed in India. On 12 October 1492 Columbus landed on a Bahamas island. This day is a holiday in Spain, for the inhabitants of South America this date marks the start of the genocide of thousands of years old cultures.

Columbus made four trips to America, from the last he returned on 7 November 1504.
The sailor died on 20 May 1506, he is buried in Seville. It is suspected however that a large part of his bones is in Santo Domingo.
