Abstract

The uterus develops from the paired Müllerian ducts, which lie outside the peritoneum. The union of the ducts to form the uterus takes place in front of the rectum and behind the bladder. In consequence of their union the peritoneum is folded to form the paired broad ligaments. The broad ligament lies in a frontal plane in the pelvis and forms a conduit for the uterine vessels known as the parametrium. It is comparable to the paraproctium (lateral ligament of the rectum) and the paracystium.
