Abstract

Meconium ileus occurs due to neonatal obstruction of the ileum by abnormally viscid meconium. This condition is most commonly associated with cystic fibrosis but is also observed in premature and very low birth weight infants. Meconium ileus can range from being a benign disease to a severe condition with complicated meconium ileus requiring urgent surgical intervention. This chapter provides an overview of the condition, its pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment.
