La Haine, which translates to "hate", is one of the most powerful and affecting films ever made. It's a modern masterpiece of emotion, bringing the viewer on a ride of images and sounds that enhance the incredible characters brought to the screen. It's criminally under-seen, which is a sad thing to think about. La Haine deserves every ounce of praise and adoration.

essentially an hour and a half session of cinematic russian roulette where every scene building up in tension is equal to another bullet you have to add to the chamber. its beauty is only rivaled by its tearful ferocity towards the horrors of marginalization. only french cinema can deliver this kind of ass kicking.
the way this film builds so much tension in how it forces us to watch time tick away, causing us to say to ourselves “so far, so good. so far, so good”. until the ending hits with a thud. because it’s all about the fall. and because we all know & live the story – the way it circles back & always stays relevant, the falling never ends.
Completely different film but this was very similar to Do the Right Thing in terms of it's structure and I loooove Do the Right Thing. So yeah, this was pretty grrrreat!

Frames in Black and White, showing a mirror to the society which is still relevant today after 22 years of its release. Vinz stands in front of the mirror uttering the famous lines from Taxi Driver. He is angry towards society and how it is in a free fall.
La Haine starts after the riots which happened because one of their friend Abdel was brutalized by the police shortly before the riot and lies in a coma.
Vinz is filled with rage, he wants to prove something to himself and to others on how gutsy he is. He just wants his characteristic to be known as Gangster who killed a cop.

They are free, but aren't allowed to upset the system. They are equal, but only in law and not in practice. They are fraternal, but only in a tribal way as other groups treat them terribly. La Haine is a scathing look at the system and its fallout in a way mainstream cinema rarely discusses. It's an explosive dissection of oppression and violence, and relevant to any time or place (within France or otherwise) where a young, urban underclass has formed.
