Cytological smear of broncho-alveolar lavage of a HIV positive patient showing faint blue dot-like intracystic bodies of pneumocystis with Giemsa stain. Pneumocystis is the most common opportunistic infection in HIV/AIDS. The image shows several trophozoites which are the dot-like nuclei with ill-defined purple cytoplasm stained clearly with giemsa. Intracystic bodies containing 8-10 nuclei inside an unstained spore may sometimes be seen, but not visible in this picture.
